Once healed, the tracheostoma should not require any particular care. In the event mucous crusting occurs, these crusts should first be softened with water or saline and wiped away. Many patients find the use of long handled tweezers helpful in removing mucous crusting but care should be taken to not pinch or damage the tracheal mucosa. If you are experiencing frequent crusting, the SLP staff can assist you with management.
Cleaning any noted debris from the stoma in the morning is typically all that many patients will require although routine removal of mucous during the day is normal.
